In addition to our wide range of fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and eggs, Mountain Valley View Farm is pleased to offer our customers fresh, homegrown herbs. Like all our products, these herbs are organic, grown without pesticides and other chemicals that are harmful to the body. The flyer above represents a small sampling of the many delicious herbs you can find at our farm. Please read on for a full list. As you will see, not only are our herbs a wonderful way to add zest to your cooking, but they each have unique health benefits that you can take advantage of.

  • Basil: Basil is originally from India, but is perhaps most famous for its use in Italian cuisine, although it is also widely used in Southeast Asian cuisine. It is the main ingredient of pesto, and can also be used in a wide variety of sauces, put on pizza, or added to curry, stir fry, and Asian soups. Health studies indicate that basil oil is antioxidant and antiviral, and in India it is used to treat asthma and diabetes.
  • Chamomile: A sweet tasting herb most often made into tea and served hot. It has soothing properties that can relieve stress and lull a person to sleep. Mountain Valley View Farm grows two varieties: German and Roman chamomile.
  • Chives: A popular herb, the smallest variety of onion. It is commonly used to season potatoes, soups, and fish, among other dishes. It is one of the staple herbs of French and Mediterranean cuisine. Chives are rich in Vitamins A & C, as well as calcium and iron.
  • Cilantro: Also known as coriander, this herb is popular in many cultures, including the Middle East, Central and South Asia, the Mediterranean, India, Mexico, Latin America, China, and Africa. It contains antioxidants and is used as a digestive aid in folk medicine.
  • Cress: Also called pepper grass, this herb is tangy and adds a pleasant zest to salads, soups, and sandwiches. It is related to the vegetable watercress, which shares its peppery flavor. Mountain Valley View Farm grows three varieties of cress.
  • Dill: An herb of Eastern European origin that American use in pickling, but with varied uses across other cultures, where it can be found in curries, soups, rice dishes, and more. Dill seeds are known to be soothing to the stomach.
  • Fennel: An herb that is widely used throughout the world, it has a similar flavor to anise. The bulb is chopped and used either cooked or raw in salads, pastas, and side dishes of Mediterranean cuisine; while the seeds are used in sausages and sauces of Italian cuisine, and in various Indian and Middle Eastern dishes. Fennel is believed to have many health benefits including soothing the digestive system, as well as a possibility for treating glaucoma, hypertension, and colic.
  • Mint: A delicious herb with a sweet, warm flavor and strong, cool aftertaste. It is used in teas and other beverages, jellies, candies, syrups, and ice creams. It is also used as a seasoning for lamb in America, Britain, and the Middle East. Health benefits of mint include alleviating stomach pain and nausea, use as a decongestant, and aromatherapy.
  • Tarragon: One of the mainstay herbs of French cuisine, it is particularly excellent with chicken, lasagna, and fish. It is used in Béarnaise sauce and to make flavored vinegar. It comes in two varieties: French tarragon, which has a stronger flavor but is more difficult to grow; and Russian tarragon, a hardy plant with a somewhat weaker flavor.
  • Thyme: A subtle herb that blends well with other herbs and spices. It is commonly used on meats (particularly lamb and chicken), soups, stews, tomatoes, and eggs. It is a main component of herbes de Provence and the Middle Eastern herb mix za’atar. Thyme is high in iron and has antiseptic properties.

We will be adding more herbs in the coming months, so please check back with us!

Organic Chicken, Duck, and Goose Eggs For Sale!

June 28, 2011
Author: Sibella

Mountain Valley View Farm is proud to announce that we are now selling farm fresh, organic eggs. We have 3 different types of chicken: Plymouth Barred Rock, Red Star, and the unusual Aracauna that lays beautiful blue and turquoise colored eggs. We also have 7 breeds of duck that lay eggs for us, and we are planning to add geese and turkeys to our flock soon. All of our birds are free range, hormone and antibiotic free, and fed a fresh grain feed that contains no soy or animal bi-products so that you can always be sure you are getting the best quality organic eggs.

Benefits of Organic Eggs

Organic eggs are extremely nutritious and contain significantly higher ratios of Vitamins A and E, Omega 3, and beta carotene than commercially produced eggs. They are also lower in cholesterol and saturated fat, making them an excellent choice for anyone concerned about their health. Furthermore, trace chemicals from pesticides and fertilizers have been detected in commercial eggs, and many of these chickens are given growth hormones and antibiotics to make them produce more. Chickens at Mountain Valley View Farm are fed an all-natural grain and allowed to roam and forage for food to supplement their diet. We do not use chemical pesticides or fertilizers on our farm, nor do we give our animals growth hormones or antibiotics, so you can be assured that our eggs will not have the toxins so common to commercially produced eggs. You will also love the taste of our eggs, as studies have shown that organic eggs from hens that eat a varied diet have a noticeably stronger and more pleasing flavor than commercial eggs.

Benefits of Duck & Goose Eggs

Duck eggs are significantly larger than chicken eggs, and goose eggs are larger still. One goose egg, when cooked, will be roughly equivalent to four chicken eggs, and both duck and goose eggs also have more yolk than the average chicken egg. Thicker shells lend themselves toward a longer shelf life (at least 6 weeks in the refrigerator), and goose eggshells are so thick that they are perfect for the delicate art of carving and embossing beautiful designs directly onto the shell. Both duck eggs and goose eggs are slightly higher in protein content, as well as containing greater concentrations of other nutrients like iron, potassium, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D.

Duck and goose eggs have their own unique flavors as well. Duck eggs have  a noticeably stronger flavor than chicken eggs, and although not everyone may care for this taste when eaten plain, nearly everyone agrees that duck eggs are unparalleled when used for baking. Their richness produces moister, fluffier baked goods–absolutely incredible cakes and cookies. Goose eggs taste similar to chicken eggs, but seem a bit drier. They are also thicker than chicken eggs and have a custard-like yolk. They are also wonderful in cooking and are best in sweet confections and omelets.

The delicious, creamy milk produced by our Nubian dairy goats and East Friesian sheep is not only gentle on the stomach and naturally more nutritious than cow milk, it is also raw and organic.

Benefits of Raw, Organic Milk

Raw milk comes fresh from the animal, unpasteurized and unhomogenized. Organic milk comes from healthy animals that have never been given growth hormones and are fed a natural grass diet free from pesticides and other chemicals. Both raw milk and organic milk have significant health benefits, and the goat milk provided by Mountain Valley View Farm is both.

Many people are already aware of the factors in favor of organic milk: a tasty beverage that is free of chemicals (particularly pesticides) that accumulate in the body, causing an increased risk in cancer and other health problems. Organic milk is also higher in nutrients, particularly Vitamin A, beta-carotene, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. But not everyone is aware that the health benefits of raw, unpasteurized milk go even deeper. The pasteurization process uses extreme heat to kill all bacteria found in raw milk; however, this also kills all of the good bacteria that aid in digestion and destroys the naturally occurring enzymes that make raw milk so nutritious. Furthermore, in removing fat from the milk, commercially processed dairy is lacking in significant portions of fat-soluble vitamins and triglycerides—good fats that the body needs. Even more importantly, pasteurization destroys the immunoglobins (antibodies) in raw milk that provide a boost to the immune system that can help fight off viruses and bad bacteria. For more information about the benefits of raw milk, click here.

Benefits of Goat Milk

Although Americans traditionally drink cow’s milk, in most other countries goat milk is a staple of everyday life and many Americans are surprised to discover that it is actually much healthier and more nutritious than what they usually drink. Goat milk has a much higher protein content and also contains more calcium, Vitamin A, riboflavin, and good fat than cow milk–but at the same time, it is significantly lower in bad fat and cholesterol. In addition, it is gentle on the stomach and easy to digest, even for infants and those who are lactose intolerant. It is also one of the highest sources of biorganic sodium, an essential mineral that is important for a healthy digestive system and is thought to reduce the risk of arthritis. For more information about the benefits of goat milk, click here.

Benefits of Sheep Milk

Like goat milk, sheep milk is naturally more nutritious and healthy than cow’s milk—but even better, for it contains significantly higher levels of protein, calcium, Vitamins A, B, D,and E, zinc, magnesium, and phosphorous than goat’s milk. Although sheep milk is higher in fat than cow or goat milk, these are mainly heart healthy unsaturated fats that have no negative impact on cholesterol. Sheep milk also contains the highest concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) found in any type of milk. CLA is known to have cancer-fighting properties.

Sheep milk is gentle on the stomach and easy to digest, even for infants and those who are lactose intolerant—once again, even moreso than goat milk. Up to 75% of lactose intolerant people, even those who cannot tolerate goat milk, are able to drink sheep milk without any adverse side effects. Most people find sheep milk tastier than cow or goat milk: rich, sweet, and creamy without the slight tanginess of goat milk. Many who try sheep milk once never want to go back to anything else.  For more information about the benefits of sheep milk, click here.

With all the nutrition of raw, organic milk combined with the added benefits of goat and sheep milk, our farm fresh milk is an excellent choice for your family! Please note that we do understand any caution you may have about raw milk, and will be happy to pasteurize it upon request.

Petting Farm at Mountain Valley View Farm!

June 23, 2011

Mountain Valley View Farm is pleased to introduce our petting zoo!

Petting zoos are an affordable, family-friendly way to spend a beautiful summer afternoon together. It is not only fun, but can be educational too, as children can learn about the different animals and see how they are cared for and utilized on our farm.

Mountain Valley View Farm is home to dozens of wonderful animals, including a large variety of birds that include 3 kinds of chicken, 11 types of goose, 7 breeds of duck, and 7 types of turkey;  adorable fainting and Nubian goats; beautiful Icelandic horses; three types of sheep; and more. Our farm is home to some exotic and endangered breeds, and there is much to see and learn.

We do ask that you respect the animals by treating them with care–please, no chasing or shouting. If you want to feed the animals, be cautious and pay attention: some of them will mistake your fingers for carrots or other food and may bite or peck. Please remember that we consider all of our animals to be part of the family. They are treated with love and are used to being around people, and will only bite if they feel threatened or think you are feeding them.

Mountain Valley View Farm is a small, family owned and operated farm located in beautiful Spokane Valley. In addition to our petting zoo, we grow a wide variety of delicious, fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. We also sell fresh, organic chicken, duck, and goose eggs as well as creamy, nutritious goat milk and cheese. Floyd Zaiger a fruit innovator to the world

June 20, 2011
Author: Sibella
by Jon Bonné

Floyd Zaiger, creator of the pluot and more than 100 varieties of fruit, eyed the group standing in his orchard.

They had come to taste 209LZ12, a vibrantly yellow-skinned, white-fleshed peach. It has less acidity than normal and relatively little sugar, which keeps it firm while retaining a mouthwatering, summery character.

He watched peach juice drip down a chin or two. “Nobody’s collapsed?” he asked. “Then, I’ll try it.”

Zaiger, 85, is arguably the most famous plant breeder alive today. From his farm west of Modesto, he has created novel new fruit – like the pluot – that grace tables around the world. He has also improved familiar varieties, such as creating plums that can weather an intercontinental voyage.

These innovations have revolutionized an increasingly global fruit industry, earning him a reputation among farmers and fellow fruit experts that is hard to overstate.

“Big, with all capital letters,” suggested Tom Gradziel, a geneticist and professor of plant sciences at UC Davis. “We’re all beneficiaries, and by we I mean the public in general and me as a breeder.”

Zaiger Genetics is hardly your average biotech outfit. At heart, Zaiger is a San Joaquin farmer, and his headquarters, with its sprawling orchards and weathered buildings, could be mistaken for any neighboring farm, save for the large gaggle of pickups in front. They belong to 15 visitors gathered for Zaiger’s regular Wednesday tour.

Experts take the tour

The group includes UC Davis researchers, one of Washington’s top cherry farmers, growers from two other continents, and the president of Dave Wilson Nursery, which markets Zaiger’s fruit in the United States. Spanish and Australian visitors were there the previous day, French the previous week.

In the orchards, everyone picks a piece of fruit, chomps down and fills their bags. It could pass for a U-Pick.

Or not. A grower from Chile pulls out a Sharpie and begins marking notes on a peach. Leith Gardner, Zaiger’s daughter, squeezes cherry juice onto a glass plate, measures the level of sugar in the fruit, and shouts that number out to the group.

Zaiger’s mission for almost a half-century has been to find a magic combination of traits that make for irresistible fruit, and these gatherings are his primary tool for R&D. Each week, he shows off his latest creations and customers assess their potential. A veto from a big grower can end a project on the spot.

1 out of 10,000

“We grow 50,000 crosses per year, and if we can get one (that works) out of every 10,000, we can break even,” Zaiger said.

Plant breeding is laborious, but the basics are simple: Find a plant that needs tinkering and another plant that’s genetically compatible and has desirable traits; emasculate one and pollinate it with the other, and hope the resulting offspring offers the best of both.

Failure comes far more than success. When success does come, the annual growing cycle makes progress slow. There are quicker options – like tweaking plant DNA with gene insertion – but Zaiger remains rooted in 1960s-era techniques.

Zaiger’s reputation has been built not only on his success but also on his conservative breeding approach.

“This is classical genetics,” said Zaiger’s son, Grant, who runs the business with his two siblings.

Great impact overseas

If Zaiger’s influence in the American produce aisle is profound – savvy shoppers will recognize the Honey Kist nectarine or the Dapple Dandy pluot by name; others will know them by flavor – his impact overseas may be even greater.

In Australia, chain stores now offer both regular and “subacid” peaches. The latter have a sweetness that shoppers find irresistible – and Zaiger has helped make subacid a formidable part of the industry, even if most Americans don’t know they’re buying subacid fruit.

Growers can order more than 100 Zaiger-created varieties. The constant feedback has provided rules of thumb: France and China love white-fleshed fruit, while the Spanish are keen on saucer peaches. Israel, South Africa and southern Spain need fruit that requires less chilling and can ripen earlier.

Raw, Organic Sheep Milk For Sale!

The delicious, creamy milk produced by our East Friesian sheep is not only gentle on the stomach and naturally more nutritious than cow and goat milk, it is also raw and organic. We also craft handmade, all-natural sheep milk soaps that are soothing and moisturizing for the skin.

Like goat milk, sheep’s milk is naturally more nutritious and healthy than cow’s milk—but even better, for it contains significantly higher levels of protein, calcium, Vitamins A, B, D,and E, zinc, magnesium, and phosphorous than goat’s milk. Although sheep milk is higher in fat than cow or goat milk, these are mainly heart healthy unsaturated fats that have no negative impact on cholesterol. Benefits of Sheep Milk Soap

Commercial soaps are not as kind to the skin as most people expect. The commercial soap making process removes naturally-occurring glycerin, a key moisturizing ingredient that is retained in all handmade soaps. Furthermore, the additives in traditional soaps are rarely gentle: harsh chemicals, alcohol, and sometimes even petroleum products, all of which can irritate and dry out the skin, leaving it itchy and red. In contrast, our handmade soaps are made with natural ingredients that are gentle and soothing—and our organic goat milk provides many excellent benefits.

Sheep milk soap is rich with butter fat and proteins that nourish the skin, as well as almost double the vitamins and minerals of other milk soaps. In sheep’s milk, the milk and cream do not separate, so that soap made from sheep milk contains all of the rich, moisturizing properties of the milk and cream combined. Sheep milk soap also contains lactic acid that acts as a natural, gentle exfoliant, leaving skin soft and glowing, feeling revitalized. It is particularly soothing for those with dry or sensitive skin.

It is also one of the highest sources of biorganic sodium, an essential mineral that is important for a healthy digestive system and is thought to reduce the risk of arthritis. Benefits of Goat Cheese

Like goat milk, goat cheese is not only tasty, it is very healthy and nutritious. It is lower in calories, fat, and cholesterol than cheese made from cow milk, and has a higher content of important vitamins and minerals such as calcium and Vitamin A. It is also a significant source of protein. Furthermore, it is easier to digest than cow cheese and can be eaten by those with sensitive stomachs, including infants and many people who are lactose-intolerant.

Goats were some of the first domesticated animals in the world, and goat cheese is possibly the oldest manmade dairy product, with a history that stretches back thousands of years. Although we in the United States have come to rely more heavily on dairy from cows, goat milk and cheese is a staple in the rest of the world, prized for its unique flavor and excellent nutritional values. Mountain Valley View Farm, Inc. is proud to continue this ancient tradition by crafting the highest quality artisan chèvre to tantalize and satisfy your tastebuds.

Benefits of Goat Milk Soap

Commercial soaps are not as kind to the skin as most people expect. The commercial soap making process removes naturally-occurring glycerin, a key moisturizing ingredient that is retained in all handmade soaps. Furthermore, the additives in traditional soaps are rarely gentle: harsh chemicals, alcohol, and sometimes even petroleum products, all of which can irritate and dry out the skin, leaving it itchy and red. In contrast, our handmade soaps are made with natural ingredients that are gentle and soothing—and our organic goat milk provides many excellent benefits.

Goat milk soap is rich with vitamins and enzymes that nourish the skin. It contains the triglyceride capric-capryllic, a highly effective moisturizer, and alpha hydroxy acid that acts as a natural exfoliant, gently sloughing off old, dead skin cells. Goat milk soap is so rejuvenating and moisturizing that many people find they no longer need to use lotion to keep their skin soft and healthy. Even better, it is soothing to those with sensitive skin and provides relief for those who suffer from eczema and psoriasis. It also helps prevent acne and treat blemishes, ensuring that your skin looks and feels its absolute best. Most importantly of all, goat milk soap has the same pH balance as human skin, a significantly beneficial factor that not even the best handmade soaps can hope to duplicate.

Birds

Chicken, Araucana

This unusual breed gets its name from the Indian tribe of Chile where they were first discovered. Araucanas lay beautiful, tasty eggs of blue-green shades from turquoise to deep olive.

Chicken, Plymouth Barred Rock

The quintessential American chicken, the Plymouth Barred Rock is an all-time favorite that was first bred in the 1800s.

Chicken, Red Star Hybrid

The Red Star is hardy bird that is sex-linked: that is, at birth, it easy to determine which chicks are male and which are female depending on their color. Females chicks are reddish brown and males are white.

Duck, Blue Swedish

This unusual duck has beautiful silvery blue, white, and black feathers and comes from the coastal areas of Holland, Germany, and Belgium.

Duck, Cayuga

Once the primary source of duck meat, Cayugas are an unusual and beautiful bird with glossy, iridescent black plumage that eventually turns white as they age.

Duck, Chocolate Runner

This is an ancient, hardy breed from Southeast Asia, and are sometimes called Indian Runners because they were originally imported to England on a ship from the Indies.

Duck, Gold Star Hybrid

Calm, even-tempered ducks that are excellent layers. Like Red Star chickens, their gender can be distinguished at birth by their color.

Duck, Khaki Campbell

A popular and famous breed, Khakis are some of the most reliable domestic layers. They were developed in England in 1901.

Duck, Welsh Harlequin

A beautiful, more recent breed with an excellent laying ability and unusual markings. They are quite popular.

Duck, White Layer

A lovely all-white duck that lays only white eggs, as opposed to the mixed blue and white eggs produced by the Gold Star that is its cousin.

Goose, African

Despite its name, this goose is actually descended from the wild Asian Swan Goose of China. They are active and somewhat noisier than other geese.

Goose, Brown Chinese

A smaller, lighter goose, the Brown Chinese has a more pronounced forehead knob than the other Asiatic geese.

Goose, Buff

A calm, friendly bird with coloring that is unusual for a goose. They were originally bred for meat, since the pinfeathers are easier to pluck.

Goose, French Toulouse

Hardy, commercial birds raised primarily for their meat. These Toulouse are directly descended from French birds.

Goose, Sebastopol

The gorgeous, unique Sebastopol comes from the countries around the Black Sea, and they have been around for hundreds of years. They were originally known as Danubians to the British or Danubio to the Spanish and Italians.

Goose, Super African

The Super African is a direct descendent of China’s Lion Head goose, including the pronounced dewlap on the throat. They are a fairly noisy breed, one of the best guard geese.

Goose, Toulouse

This popular goose originated in France, although nowadays many come from England. They are an excellent meat duck, a sturdy breed.

Goose, Tufted Buff

A hardy, pleasant breed that was developed as a cross between the Buff goose and the Roman Tufted goose.

Goose, Tufted Toulouse

A calm breed with all the characteristics of the French Toulouse, but with a tuft on its head like the Roman Tufted.

Goose, White Chinese

A pure white goose descended from the wild swans of China, although interestingly enough, the swans did not have the forehead knob. They are a sociable bird.

Goose, White Embden

A large white goose similar to the Toulouse, but orginating in Germany. The breed has been in existence for about 200 years.

Dogs

Cockapoo

The Cockapoo is a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, making an intelligent and affectionate pet. Reggie & Ginger, our first generation purebreds, have already had two litters of sweet puppies.

Icelandic Sheepdog

Our two Icelandic Sheepdogs are quiet, mild-mannered, and sweet. The breed is sturdy and energetic, still used to herd sheep in Iceland today. They are descended from dogs brought to Iceland by the Vikings.

Newfoundland

Lily, our 6 month old Newfoundland, is an absolute delight. This large, strong breed is famous for rescuing sailors and fishermen from icy waters. Lewis & Clark were accompanied by a Newfoundland named Seaman on their journeys.

Rottweiler

Cocoa is still a puppy, but she is quiet and well-behaved. Contrary to popular belief, Rottweilers are not violent or dangerous. Rather, they are loyal and reliable, with an even temperament.

Livestock

Goat, Fainting (Myotonic)

These adorable goats are bred more as pets or for their meat than for milk. When startled, their legs will go stiff and they will fall over in a faint, a harmless condition called myotonia. For a full list of the fainting goats in our herd, please click here.

Goat, Nubian

The Nubian is an excellent dairy goat, known for its rich, creamy milk that is high in butter content and gentle on the stomach. Many lactose intolerant people discover that they can drink Nubian milk. For a full list of the Nubian goats in our herd, please click here.

Horse, Icelandic

A strong and sturdy breed despite its smaller size, the Icelandic is also friendly and docile. A truly beautiful and unique horse, we are thrilled to have a small group on our farm.

Sheep, Babydoll Southdown

This ancient British breed of miniature sheep makes a gentle, friendly pet, and their cute teddy bear faces are instantly lovable. Their wool is also excellent for spinning.

Sheep, East Friesian

The East Friesian comes from Germany and is known as the best dairy producing sheep in the world. They are polled, or naturally hornless.

Sheep, Icelandic

The Icelandic sheep has been prized for its meat, milk, and wool. It is one of the oldest breeds of sheep in the world. They are very sturdy and do well in cold environments.
